Paramount Pictures announced the sequel to the film in May 2020. Fowler was back as director and Josh Miller as writer. Schwartz, Carrey, and the rest of cast reprised their roles after the success of the original. Filming was done in Vancouver and Hawaii from March 2021 to June 2021.
Paramount Pictures and Sega Sammy Group theatrically released Sonic the Hedgehog 2, in several markets, on March 30, 2022. In the United States, on April 8, 2018, the film was released on April 8. Although the film received praise for its action sequences and humor, as well as the performances of the cast, criticism was levelled at the screenplay, runtime, and pacing. The film was praised by some critics as an improvement on its predecessor.
It grossed $404 million worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing video game film in the United States, the fourth highest-grossing video game film of all time, and the tenth-highest-grossing film of 2022. Paramount+ is currently developing a spin-off miniseries featuring Knuckles and Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
