Scream is a 2022 American horror film that was directed and written by Guy Busick, Matt Bettinelli Olpin and Tyler Gillett. It is the fifth installment to the Scream film series. The film, which is being called a relaunch of Scream’s film series, is actually a direct sequel Scream 4 (2011). This film also marks the first film to not have been directed by Wes Craven after his death in 2015. Craven is credited at the beginning of Craven’s film.

The film stars Melissa Barrera (Kyle Gallner), Mason Gooding; Mikey Madison, Mikey Madden, Dylan Minnette and Jenna Ortega. Sonia Ammar is also in the film alongside Heather Matarazzo. Roger L. Jackson and Courteney Cx. David Arquette and Neve Campbell. They reprise their roles from previous installments.
The film is set twenty-five year after the Woodsboro murders. A new Ghostface appears, and begins to target a group teens who are all somehow connected to the original killings. Scream, like previous entries, combines the violence and horror of the slasher style with elements black comedy and mystery to mock the current trend of sequels and remakes. The film provides commentary on horror fandom culture, including the distinction between “elevated fear” and classic slasher movies.
The possibility of a fifth and sixth Scream film was discussed following the release in 2011 of Scream 4. However, Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Williamson, and Craven had reservations about continuing with additional films due to the poor box office performance of Scream 4. Spyglass Media Group acquired the rights for the Scream franchise in November 2019. This was after Weinstein’s 2017 allegations of sexual assault against him and The Weinstein Company closing down.
Williamson returned as an executive producer in the next year and confirmed that it would not be a remake. Betinelli-Olpin of Radio Silence was hired in March 2020 to direct. Campbell and Arquette confirmed their return later that month. Cox joined the cast throughout the year. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, filming was delayed and filmed in North Carolina between September 2019 and November 2020. To avoid any plot leaks there were multiple versions of the screenplay and many additional scenes filmed.
Paramount Pictures released Scream theatrically in the United States on January 14, 2022. The film grossed $140million worldwide. It was highly acclaimed by critics as it honored Craven’s legacy and offered thoughtful meta-commentary on horror movies. In February 2022, a sequel untitled was announced with a release schedule for March 31, 2023.
