Nay Varanbhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha – NVLKNK has been in the media since the trailer for the film was released online. This is even more since Rekha Sharma, the chief of National Commission For Women (NCW), wrote a letter to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
The NCW chief requested that there is a ban on the ‘open distribution of sexually explicit contents involving minors on social networking platforms’. He noted that the trailer for Mahesh Manjrekar’s film depicts minors and women in objectionable ways.
Jayant Pawar’s Varanbhatloncha Ni Kon Nay Koncha story is the basis of this crime-drama. It is about two young Mumbai chawls who make their way into the criminal world. The only goal of young Digya, Prem Dharmadhikari, is to become a criminal and kill the man who murdered his father.
Iliyas, his friend (Varad Nagvekar), is there to keep him company as he does all his deeds. These two teenagers are still learning every day about the human body, and human behaviour. There is no one to help them understand these things, except Digya’s grandmother (Chhayakadam), who has the house to run.
They grew up in difficult circumstances, both financially and socially. It’s impossible to help them now, especially since they have chosen to go down the path to crime which will eventually land them in prison or death.
You can see Manjrekar’s Vaastav (1999), as well as Lalbaug Parel (10/10). These films show the impact of Mumbai’s closing of its mills on the families of workers, and how the younger members of these families get involved in criminal activity. Manjrekar said that these three films are his complete trilogy.
NVLKNK, while a revenge-crime-drama with a compelling story, has two issues. They have unnecessary titillation. Although these aren’t necessarily unnecessary, the film does go overboard with them.
Manjrekar on his own has done his best not to focus too much on the violence or explicit scenes and instead tried to conceal the reasons behind them.
Quentin Tarantino’s approach to the film is reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino. Not only does it have violence and content but it also has a non-linear treatment. It reveals much more than it is able to conceal, making NVLKNK predictable.
