Film is loosely based upon Ganga Jagjivandas Katiawadi’s true story. Gangubai Kothewali was a popular name for Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi. Her life was detailed in the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by S. Hussain Zaidi. The film tells the story of Kathiawad’s simple girl who embraced her destiny and turned it in her favor. Gangubai Kathiawadi was premiered at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival, 16 February 2022. It was then released in theatres on February 25, 2022.
Gangubai Kathiawadi was praised by critics. The film earned around Rs209.77 crore worldwide and was a commercial success in India. Its India box office net collection was Rs129.10 million. Gangubai Kathiawadi, the fourth-highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022, is currently No. 4.
Madhu, a young girl, is forced to prostitution against her will. Madhu refuses to be a prostitute and is instead tortured by Rashmibai, a brothel madame. Gangubai is later asked to convince Madhu. Madhu is approached by Gangubai, and she tells her story.
Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi was born into an affluent Kathiawadi family. Ganga Jagjivandas Kathiawadi is the daughter of a barrister. She aspired for a career as a Bollywood actress. She eloped to Mumbai with her boyfriend Ramnik Lal at 16 because he promised Ganga a career in film under the guidance of his aunt Sheela. She was forced to become a prostitute after her husband sold her to Sheela Masi, a Kamathipura brothel owner for Rs 1000. Later, she changed her name to Gangu.
She meets Kamli, a female named Kamli while she is there. Gangu is attacked by Shaukat Abbas Khan, a man who calls himself Shaukat. After hearing her plea, she goes to Rahim Lala, a mafia leader, for justice. He becomes her sworn sister. After Sheela Masi’s death, Gangu is made the madame in her brothel. She renames herself Gangubai and becomes a powerful political figure.
